A. Role and Tasks of Volunteer
The project will take place for 2 month starting from 01/10/2010 until 01/12/2010. The volunteers of the proposed project will be
• Working with the teenagers who come from the villages or rural areas of Balıkesir. Those students have english class during academic year but they don’t have any possibility to practice their language. So, with the calloboration of the local institute named DILKO we will have a space for those children to practice their english through the games. Volunteer will be helping to the teacher to organize games and workshops to support this learning process.
Volunteers will meet project coordinator and institutor to prepare activity planing for two months. And they will be asked to support teacher according to this plan.
Volunteer will involve in the project by presenting or bringing his/her cultural games or handcraft works. Showing examples of their culture through the games and work shops volunteers will help those teenagers to improve their language skills and also to be tolerated to other cultures, and to develope intercultural dialogue.
Beside volunteers will go to visit school of those teenagers and help reconstruction of the school. Such as painting the fences, planting flowers, cleaning the garden etc. We will get the opinion and suggestions of volunteers on the needs of garden design or renovations of the institutions.
Volunteers will be asked to organize cultural nights for the members of the association, young people and also other volunteers who are already in Balıkesir for long term voluntary service.
Volunteers can join the courses that is organized in GESOGED about traditional dances and arts. For the weekends volunteers will have opportunity to join the excursions which will organize by GESOGED.
Finally, volunteers will participate in the Turkish language courses and they will learn about some aspects of Turkish culture.
In all of the above-mentioned activities, volunteers will work under the guidance and control of professional staff. Each volunteer will have the chance of working in an activity of his/her own interest.
The tasks of the volunteer in terms of the approximate rates of his/her working time in general will be as the following:
1)Working in language class: % 50
2)Interacting (sports, chatting etc) with teenagers and youth: % 25
3)Learning Turkish language and culture: % 25
4)Traveling in and around Balikesir: At the weekends (optional)
5)Cultural, artistic, and sportive activities: in free times (optional)
B. Practical Arrangements
1.Working Hours
The volunteer will be working a total of 35 hours/week (language course included). No work is involved at weekends.
From Monday to Friday, the working hours of a typical day will be as the following.
08.00-09.00: Breakfast
09.00-10.30: Turkish language course
10.30-12.00: Work in language class
12.00-12.30: Break
12.30-13.30: Lunch
13.30-14.30: Sports/games
14.30-17.30: Work on garden design/renovational needs of the school
17.30-18.30: Artistic/cultural lessons (optional)
18.30-20.00: Dinner
At the weekends, trips in and around Balikesir will be organized for all volunteers. Participating in those trips will be optional.
2.Days off per week and Holidays
The volunteer will not work during weekends and national and religious holidays of Turkish society . Additionally, the volunteer will have 4 days of break during the voluntary service period. The timing of the break will be jointly determined by the project coordinator and the volunteer.
3.Monthly Allowance
The volunteer will receive 85 Euro per months as the monthly allowance. This amount of money will be paid in cash after getting a signed confirmation.
4.Accommodation
The volunteer will share a nice and hygiene room with two or three more volunteers. Electricity, Internet and hot water will be available for 24 hours every day. All the costs of accommodation will be covered by the coordinator organization.
5.Food and Local Transport
The volunteer will receive sufficient additional money to cover his/her expenses of food and local transportation or the Association may arrange a place for their meals.
6.Language Course
Upon arrival, the volunteer will receive Turkish language course from a private teacher. It will be 6 hours in a week.
7.Personal Support
The volunteer will have a mentor who will be in contact with the volunteer whenever they need. The mentor will orientate the volunteer to the new environment and work place. If the volunteer wants to take psychological support, GESOGED will provide such a support as well.
C. Expected Learning Outcomes
The volunteers are expected to;
get knowledge and experience on teaching language through the games to the foreigner teenagers.
better understand the needs and educational priorities of people form less developed areas.
be aware of different perceptions and attitudes of different cultural environments towards poverty and people with fewer opportunities,
use and to develop their skills and capabilities,
develop skills of team work and of working in multi-cultural environments,
learn Turkish language and culture as much as possible,
get opportunities of learning some Turkish dances,
get opportunities of learning Turkish handcrafts,
develop tolerance to cultural diversities,
demonstrate samples of games, music, meals, dances etc. from her own culture,
get a deeper understanding of the Youth Program of EU and youth work,
In order to gain all those knowledge, skills and attitudes, the volunteers will be
working under, and getting support from, the guidance of professional trainers,
encouraged to do small projects of their own.
